I was the first race of the day - older women and had been told about the steep uphill so I tried to save my energy. The hill never materialized as apparently the course marshals turned us wrong and we missed the turn to the hill but we ran through the patch where they had cut down some small trees but left several inches so we had to hop over that. I was still wondering about the steep uphill when some called out to me - 1/2 mile to go and that was downhill. When I saw the clock at the finish line I was stunned - I could not run that fast on the road never mind in the heat and humidity of that day. My race was short by a considerable amount. Given the heat I was happy about that.(fortunately the course marshals when they realized the error had the entire heat run the shortened course) I have no recollection of my finish time but I learned later that I was on a team and we were 3rd in the age group(must have been W 55-59). I stayed in the dorm and it had no a/c so after a couple of days I decided to leave and drive back to Boston. I stopped at the main stadium and asked for my medal - received it - and drove home - stopping at every rest stop on the highway because of the heat. BTW - Ruth Anderson suffered a considerable burn from the torch. Thanks for the story - it brings back memories for sure.Maryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04408136850672575656noreply@blogger.com
